labyrinth-1I’m sure I’m not alone in having had one of those moments of weakness when, as an intelligent and discerning consumer who expects a certain level of service and understands what I’m buying, I have nonetheless done it!

‘It’, of course, is purchasing that amazing TV special offer and ending up with a slap chop – and if it’s a really good day, perhaps a set of complimentary steak knives – that, after a week, is consigned to a dust-gathering grave in some dark and increasingly overcrowded kitchen cupboard.

But wait, there’s more…

When it comes to our health and that of our loved ones, making the right purchase becomes a whole lot more critical as, while it might be annoying that the slap chop gets filed in the junk drawer, a bad call on our private health insurance is going to be felt way beyond our hip pocket.

Given the product confusion out there and, dare I say, a lack of transparency in some instances, it’s not surprising to learn that in recent months, the Private Health Insurance ombudsman has had to deal with a steady rise in complaints from private health insurance customers.

Most of these, research tells us, come down to it being well-nigh impossible to plough through the puzzling and jargon-filled fine print and make an astute comparison between one product offering and another.

The great news is this is all about to change, with new reforms dictating how private health insurers will provide consumers with just four cover options – gold, silver, bronze and basic.

But wait, there’s more…

It also means that we, the consumers, have greater control in our hands. There’s now a transparent playing field where we know precisely what it is we’re buying –and what we get in return for our premium. Be it the ‘bells and whistles’ option or a more modest ‘no frills’ package, there’s now credibility and integrity in what is offered.

I believe this is an exciting time for anyone currently with or thinking of taking out private health insurance as we really can play meerkat, compare the market and end up with a policy that best reflects us and our needs.

In short, we can say goodbye to the bad buy!
