North Eastern Community Hospital is pleased to announce the commencement of Dr Sam Costello (Gastroenterologist) who is commencing endoscopy and clinic appointments every fourth Tuesday from March 2017.

Dr Sam Costello was born and raised in Mt Gambier, South Australia. He graduated from medical school at the University of Adelaide in 2004 and then completed basic physician training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Sam then completed Gastroenterology training at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Repatriation General Hospital. He undertook a clinical fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease at St Mark’s Hospital in London in 2016.

Sam is a staff specialist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and a consultant with the inflammatory bowel disease service. He established and continues to maintain the South Australian stool bank for the treatment of Clostridium difficile infection with faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and has advised other groups in Australia and internationally about developing similar services.

Sam is passionate about medical research. He is a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide where the focus of his research has been FMT as a treatment for ulcerative colitis. He has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed international journals and has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences.

Sam enjoys teaching both medical students as well as doctors in training and is a clinical lecturer at the University of Adelaide.

He aims to deliver high quality, personalised medical care tailored to each patient’s unique circumstances.

His other interests include spending time with his family, playing cricket and watching football.
