John was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, in July 1942. He immigrated to Australia in 1951 with his older brother, mother and father via ship. After living 2 years in Adelaide, the family settled in Clearview.
After John left school, he completed a plumbing apprenticeship, obtaining his Master Plumber’s qualification when he was 21. John started working with Hickinbotham Homes until he went out to work by himself for different builders and private homes.
John met his wife Helen at the Wonderland Dance Hall at Norwood Town Hall when he was 21. They were married three years later in 1966 in the Scots Church on North Terrace. John and Helen have three children: Greg, Glen and Sue, as well as six grandchildren.
After working as a plumber, John left his business to work for SA Water as a Senior Plumbing Investigation Officer. He worked for SA Water for approximately sixteen years before retiring at the age of 53.
John has a love for painting. He completed five years of Art school in his thirties, taking it up again at Art school in Gawler when he retired. The art that John most enjoyed was painting landscapes with oils, drawing portraits in charcoal and drawing cartoons and caricatures.
John also had a love for learning all there was to do with computers. He learned Photoshop and Microsoft applications at Marden Senior College. John volunteered his time helping seniors basic computer skills at the Enfield RSL. John was often praised for his patience in helping people at the RSL Club with his gentle and caring nature.
