As an obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Majid Rasekhi thinks he has the best job in medicine. That’s because despite being a highly specialised field, it’s an area of practice that he believes has the most variety.

“When I did my three month rotation in obstetrics and gynaecology I liked it, because, especially in obstetrics, you do everything,” Dr Rasekhi said.

“You are caring for a woman and a baby, so you need to know paediatrics. You will need to perform surgery, so you are a surgeon as well.

“With obstetrics and gynaecology you do ultrasound, so you are a sonographer, and because (obstetrics and child birth) is unpredictable, it’s emergency medicine as well.

“And then with pregnancy, with all the issues that pregnant women can experience, you need to be good at medicine generally, because your patient may develop heart failure, arthritis, thyroid problems, or you may even treat a pregnant women with cancer.”

Dr Rasekhi has worked as an obstetrician and gynaecologist across most major metropolitan public hospitals, including the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital and Modbury Hospital.

Now, he’s one of the most experienced obstetricians and gynaecologists in Adelaide, splitting his week between his work in public hospitals and his private practice.

He believes in the importance of continuing to train junior doctors in the public system, and also in the benefits of what obstetricians are able to offer in the private system.

“In private you have the freedom to make a decision, execute that decision, and also provide a consistency of care to your patient,” he said.

“In public you may see somebody today, and next week somebody else… the consistency of care is the most important aspect of private practice.

“I also think to be a good obstetrician you always need to improve your knowledge of obstetrics and gynaecology, and to make sure as far as possible patients can achieve what they are planning for.”

Dr Rasekhi also sees the staff at North Eastern as a major benefit to patients who chose to have their baby or receive treatment at the hospital.

“I think North Eastern has very, very good nursing and midwifery staff, and everybody loves them.

“I think the support you get is the best you can get amongst the private hospitals, and they look after patients the best way they can. It’s really like a family that is working together.”
